The final seconds of extra time were ticking down on Monday night when the coach of Australia’s national soccer team made the boldest call of his career. With a spot in this year’s World Cup on the line, Graham Arnold pulled his goalkeeper out of the game.
Australia was moments away from a winner-take-all penalty shootout against Peru. And this, Arnold decided, was the perfect moment for an unheard of, 119th-minute, goalie switcheroo. Out came Australian starter Mathew Ryan and in went the 33-year-old Andrew Redmayne, an anonymous journeyman who has never played for a club outside Australia.
