Toronto’s ICE condos has struck a deal with Airbnb that adds a 15 per cent booking surcharge to short-term rentals in the two towers. The additional guest fee will help pay for building operations and services.
In exchange, Airbnb becomes the exclusive rental platform for the buildings on York St. near Bremnar Blvd. ICE has been referred to as a ghost hotel because so many of the units are believed to be used exclusively as short-term rentals by the investor owners.ICE isn’t the first Toronto building to be part of the company’s Residential Hosting program that dates back to 2016 and is supposed to “enable residents in their buildings and communities to responsibly host on Airbnb,” a spokesperson told the Star in an email.
Matt McNama said he couldn’t provide a tally of how many buildings have similar arrangements. But he said it allows buildings to put short-term hosting rules in place and provides control over short-term rentals.
