Stephen Means and Andrew Gillis discuss Ohio State football.

Listen to Buckeye Talk, your favorite Ohio State football podcast, five days a week with Stephen Means and Andrew Gillis. On this episode of Buckeye Talk, Stephen Means and Andrew Gillis explore whether Downs’ offensive usage is a realistic thing to expect or just a good idea in the middle of the summer. One person decides to have some fun with it. The other chooses the boring route.Elite 11 begins in California as Ohio State commit Tavien St.

Caleb Downs, 5 star safety, maybe the best safety in college football, one of the 5 best defensive players in college football, part time running back. What do you think of that idea?think Ryan Day got his edition of NCAA football like a month earlier than we did. And I think he was just screwing around on the PlayStation and went, Hey, this guy’s really fast. Let’s have some fun. I think it’s a fun concept. And we’re recording this on Tuesday, June 18th. I think it’s a fun month long.

Is Kaleb Downs better than Quincheon Judkins running the ball between the tackles? Probably not. Kaleb Downs is a great athlete. He’s a great football player. He’s a great safety. I just think it’s a fun idea to put in people’s heads and a fun ideal to say like, this is what we can do. But Ohio State has the best running back tandem in the country. And I just have a hard time rationalizing why you would take them off the field for any given time.

part of the conversation of their exploring every option, not leaving any stone unturned to make sure if they’re put into a position, it’s not being sprung on them on like a Wednesday practice before a game. No, they rep some of this stuff. Even said we’ve pissed it to him a couple of times. Is anybody expecting Caleb Downs to turn into Travis Hunter? No, but Ohio State’s done this before Rashad Berry back in 2019.

So because it’s a thing that’s only a thing because there’s other things to talk about, we get to talk about the best safety in the country, getting five carries this year and whether or not we think if I put the over under a three and a half carries for Caleb Dowd for Ohio State over the next 16 games in 2024, you take in the over or the under.I’m gonna take the under. I think this might be something you try out once and then you try it out. Or maybe even not at all. Maybe you just bring it up.

That’s the thing if you’re gonna have a formation that you’re gonna play on game day You gotta have three or four different things that you can’t not saying you will run them You have to be able to run them because if not every time this guy goes on the field Everybody knows what you’re doing. I’m not saying it’s going to happen.

and it’s like a little jet sweep to Caleb Downs. And it’s like a six yard gain or something like that. But it’s like, if they win the national championship and then we’re talking about moments from the season that mattered the most, we’re talking about, Caleb Downs converting the third into jet sweep. Where did they come up with that idea?it you know what I couple things there.

I want you to pull it out against Michigan or in a playoff game, in a game that matters. That’s where you pull that out in those situations. That’s, yeah, that’s the ultimate middle finger to Michigan. If like you’re up by like 28 to 10 in the third or fourth quarter, you put in Caleb. with guys like James Peebles and Sam Williams Dixon is that, hey, maybe we throw our former five star safety back there and let’s just see what happens because why not? It’s football. Let’s have fun. Okay, we’re going to take a quick break there. As Andrew kind of mentioned there, he was also out there doing a very different thing than I was doing, talking with some recruits. It was a seven on seven camp. Get the text, six one four three five, all three, three, four, five.

So, you know, Damien was just there, you know, he had a tank top on and he had like some kind of Crocs or something there, some kind of slides or something on. So he was not, you know, football ready. You know, he was not a, you know, he’s not, you know, working out or anything like that. He was just kind of going through with his team and following along and cheering on his teammates. And yeah, he, you know, this is a guy who it’s going to be a recruitment that I believe goes down to.

I don’t have any knowledge of that. He just looked bigger than that to me. I would guess he was probably 6 ‘5″, maybe like 240, 250 at this point. So with Damien, this is going to be a recruitment that’s really, really interesting to monitor. This is a kid that is really, really talented. And when you talk about Ohio State’s defensive line recruiting and Ohio State’s defensive recruiting as a whole, this guy would be a big part of that.

the way that he handles himself, speed to power, just the athleticism is there. It’s a really impressive kid. And, you know, I think you look at the talent that Justin Hill has and you see kind of what Ohio State sees where we can use this guy in a little bit different of a mold. So there are a couple of things that were pretty interesting to me. I get the sense, you know, talking to people and kind of...

you know, maybe a more hand in the dirt front. I asked him specifically, I was like, Ohio State hasn’t really done this. How are they showing you what you want to do or what they want you to do? And how are they showing you this is what we think you can be? Because we know that there are a lot of really great players that Ohio State recruits and that throw on the tape and they say, boom, that’s you.

He had an Ohio State beanie on, so would you want to read into that and say, hey, he’s in Columbus, he’s got the beanie on, I don’t know, whatever. I look at him as a really, really talented football player that can do a lot of different things. That doesn’t cross. That crosses my mind a little bit. That’s not the word choice to use there, but that’s not coincidence that he decided to say that with Justin Hill on the campus, right? As the guy who we all think if Ohio State is going to use the Jack at some point with Jim Knowles, Justin Hill maybe fits it better than most as a highly rated guy with a body type that fits that. Okay. Couple more people who were on campus that there was a quarterback here.

kind of what they were. And you know, you’re not, you know, looking at this list going that’s an Ohio State receiver, right? Because, I mean, we talked about De ‘Corey and Moore, for example, every school in the country would take that kid. We talked about Vernal Brown, every school in the country would take that kid.

You know, the size is crazy. He’s a big kid. He’s listed at 641 80. Steven, you were there too. He looks bigger than that. Like this is a bigger body receiver. And I hesitate to use the word project because I don’t mean it to sound derogatory, but this is a guy who might take a year. You might need a little bit of a longer development track, but the upside for, for bodypending is crazy. And, you know, it’s, it’s a really cool story.
