Matt Damon was the perfect Jason Bourne in the original trilogy, but the actor needs to be replaced in Bourne 6 to keep the franchise feeling fresh.

While the Bourne movies succeeded thanks to Matt Damon’s stellar work as their antihero, the franchise now needs to move on from his version of the amnesiac super spy in Bourne 6. The Bourne series tried and failed to reinvent itself once before. In 2012, The Bourne Legacy cast Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross, an original character whose movie hoped to continue the story of Operation Treadstone in a new iteration of the franchise.

7 Jason Bourne Was A Low Point For The Franchise Jason Bourne was a letdown for anyone expecting a return to form from the spy franchise. While the action sequences were serviceable, the sequel failed to recapture the bruising brutality and tense, paranoid atmosphere of the original trilogy. Even the spy becoming a street fighter after Bourne’s original trilogy felt sillier and more escapist than the taut thrills of the earlier movies.

5 Matt Damon Is Too Old For Bourne One thing that the Bourne series had over James Bond’s movies was relative believability. While the Bourne movies were hardly unerringly faithful to reality, they did depict real-life political issues, such as corruption within organizations like the CIA as well as the human cost of international imperialism. However, Jason Bourne stretched credulity when the sequel brought Damon back to the role of the aging spy.

3 The Bourne Legacy Was The Right Move For The Franchise's Future While The Bourne Legacy was flawed, its attempt at reinvention is exactly the series needed. Renner didn’t have Damon’s charisma, and the reboot’s story stuck too closely to the plot of the original trilogy, but this doesn’t mean that The Bourne Legacy’s approach can’t be replicated in another, stronger reboot.
