5 years later, Maria Bartiromo explains how she's grown at Fox—and why she had to leave CNBC
Maria Bartiromo in 2014, when she made her debut on the Fox Business Network.
Bartiromo's influential audience did, in fact, follow her to Fox; Fox Business has overtaken CNBC as the most-watch business network on television, and, her flagship pre-market show, just marked its first full year at No. 1 over CNBC's iconicwith its total viewers numbers in 2018 rising 21% compared with 2017. The Sunday morning show she launched,, regularly outperforms all other Sunday shows on cable news. And in February, set a record for the network's highest ratings in the 9 p.m.
Bartiromo remembers a meeting she had with her boss at CNBC when she advanced the idea of broadening the network's business coverage to focus on policy."I said to him: 'Look, I really feel that people do not care about this constant focus on the near term. Everything we're doing is: What is the stock market going to do? What are financials going to do?' And he told me right then and there: 'Nope, I disagree.
"Mark, this story of China is so fascinating," she said, eagerly diving into a discussion of China, corporate espionage, IP theft and forced transfer of technology—a story she's covered doggedly for 18 months."I can honestly say that the conversation I'm having today at Fox is the most intellectually stimulating conversation I've ever had."
