, I notice university students posting their “Ramadan adventures” and iftar meals at restaurants on Instagram and TikTok. As you browse through your social media, you might also come across posts depicting large iftar gatherings, gorgeous decor, and other extravagances commemorating our holy month. While these posts are certainly pretty, they aren't necessarilyRamadan is the month when family and friends gather to break their fasts and spend quality time together.
It's easy to feel compelled to do things just because we watch others do them, or to feel like we aren’t doing things right when we see other habits reflected online. Here’s some good news: Whether you’re eating out or at home, alone or with a group, amid decorations or in your everyday environment, however you choose to spend Ramadan is valid. And, however we choose to observe Ramadan, it should be inclusive.
So, how can we make sure the holy month doesn't leave anyone in our community behind? Since Ramadan is all about kindness and empathy, we can focus on comforting one another and performing small gestures to ensure those around us do not feel alone. Here are some more intimate ways to build community and celebrate Ramadan:Leaders and organizations should make sure that the community is aware of new Muslims in attendance and that they are actively engaged with them.
