Southern Pacific treated wood at the rail yard to make rail ties from 1911 to 1984. Workers applied creosote in this process, forcing it into the wood in pressurized cylinders. Creosote was a commonly used preservative then and continues to be used in places today. Union Pacific merged with the company in 1997, acquiring the site and its contaminated ground and groundwater.
Union Pacific proposed a cleanup plan in 2014 to state environmental regulators, which is still under consideration. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality held a virtual community meeting to discuss it with residents and company officials in 2021, which was
