5 employees OD on fentanyl at N.J. mall, police say
The women, who were identified as employees of the mall, were revived using Narcan and CPR and four of the five were taken to a local hospital for treatment, according to a statement from the Hackensack Police Department. The fifth woman refused transport.
While the investigation was in its early stages, police said they suspected that the women ingested fentanyl, a highly potent synthetic opioid that is responsible for an increasing number of drug-related deaths across the country, and became unresponsive.
Antista added that fentanyl is often laced with other drugs such as cocaine or heroin to provide a stronger effect. Hackensack Mayor John Labrosse said his office was working with the department, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office in the investigation. “It is truly heartbreaking to see the terrible toll taken by these illicit and dangerous substances,” Labrosse said. “My office has been working closely with law enforcement since this tragic incident was first reported, and we will continue to offer any necessary support to the emergency responders and the rest of the community as the situation continues to unfold.”Thank you for relying on us to provide the local news you can trust.
