Coming into the season, the 49ers were a consensus runaway winner for the NFC West division title.
That has been the fall from grace that the San Francisco 49ers have experienced in the NFC West division. Losing three games in a row is not only demoralizing the 49ers, but it is uplifting the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks suddenly find themselves atop the division thanks to the 49ers' plummet.
Seattle was a team that would linger, but not really present that much of a threat to the 49ers winning it. However, the situation has changed drastically after the 49ers' three game skid. Seattle now sits in first place with momentum on their side, while the 49ers are on a Bye week forced to reevaluate themselves. There is a case to be made that the 49ers took their foot off the gas pedal when they started 5-0.
I have to admit that I did not consider Seattle to be a team that could challenge the 49ers either. Before the season, I expected the 49ers to steamroll the Seahawks. Geno Smith definitely isn't the same quarterback as last season, but he is still no slouch. They have a solid run game with the same lethal receivers in D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. And the Seahawks defense is looking quite fierce, which is more than you can say about the 49ers defense.
There is now a realistic scenario that the 49ers lose the division to the Seahawks. It's something I never could've fathomed over a month ago. The 49ers need to be locked in right from the jump when they come out of their Bye week. They cannot take any opponent lightly and need to feel the heat of every matchup. Seattle didn't look threatening before, but now the 49ers aren't as strong, while the Seahawks look to be surging.
