Graniterock seeks to redevelop site in south San Jose despite hundreds of thousands in penalties
A Bay Area construction company seeking San Jose City Council approval for a redevelopment project at its facilities in the southern part of the city was sued earlier this year for releasing toxic pollutants into two of San Jose’s waterways and has agreed to pay a $375,000 penalty.
The violations reportedly occurred at the company’s cement facility on 11711 Berryessa Road and recycling plant on 100 Granite Rock Way. Tuesday’s council vote involves a nearby site on 120 Granite Rock Way. Steelhead trout, the California Tiger Salamander and the California Red Legged Frog have all been at risk as a result of the toxic stormwater, the lawsuit states. Environmental experts assert that the chemicals released by Graniterock could have far-reaching consequences for both the species’ reproductive process and the numerous homeless residents who live along the city’s rivers.
