In this compelling new revelation, researchers identified 40 distinct shark species and their relatives, including six previously unknown ones. The species were found at the Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky., an ancient species dating back 337 million years, which belongs to the petalodont shark family. This extinct shark is described by its petal-shaped teeth.likely had teeth that included one rounded cusp used for clipping and a long, ridge inert side that crushed prey the way molars do.

This inventory is still continuing with the purpose of identifying various fossils associated with the park's exposed rock layers, both inside and outside the caves, according to a statement by the National Park Service.Upon exploring the remote caves, particularly the Ste. Genevieve Limestone at the national park, shark teeth, and fin spines were uncovered.

He added that the team spotted a range of different species of chondrichthyans that fill a variety of ecological niches, from large predators to tiny little sharks that lived amongst the crinoid forest on the seafloor that was their habitat.
