Over 18,000 lightning strikes occurred Monday evening across Interior Alaska.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Since Monday, July 24, over 18,000 lightning strikes occurred across Interior Alaska and 30 new fires have started according to the Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Two Fire Boss airplanes and smokejumpers were sent to the Moose Fire which is burning near mile 100 Elliott Highway with additional smokejumpers sent to the Boulder Fire burning approximately 17 miles northwest of Manley Hot Springs. Additionally there were 14 new fires burning between Minto, Tanana and the Ray Mountains. There are also 12 new fires burning that are no threat to structures and are being reevaluated today, Tuesday, July 25, according to BLM Fire Service.

Other Richardson Highway fires burning include the Pogo Mine Road Fire which is near Delta. It is approximately 150 acres in size and poses no risk at this time to structures. The fire is being monitored for activity. There is also the 6-Mile Pogo Fire that is burning with no risk to structures. It is being monitored and is estimated to be six acres in size.
