INGLEWOOD, Calif. — KaVontae Turpin probably didn’t need to have the night he had Saturday to make the Cowboys’ 53-man roster. They were already aware of his...

Turpin’s kickoff return went for 98 yards in the first quarter. His punt return spanned 86 yards in the second. He watched from the sideline, no longer in shoulder pads.

“He’s so dynamic,” coach Mike McCarthy said. “You go back to his college days, and clearly, in my opinion, he was the best player I saw in the USFL coming out. I’ve been so impressed with him since Day 1. He got here the first day, picked the offense up and jumped right in there. He’s very dynamic on special teams.”If the Cowboys choose to cut Davis, an undrafted rookie from Florida, when reducing from 80 to 53 players on Aug. 30, they cannot expect him to clear waivers.

“That was my focus coming into this game,” Davis said. “I wanted to do better than I did last week on special teams.”Theoretically, they could keep both behind Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard, but that is a luxury the team may simply not afford when considering other crowded areas on the depth chart, such as the secondary., should be declared the starting left guard this week.

He should see a higher concentration of first-team snaps when the team next practices Tuesday inside Ford Center at The Star. The rotation with Connor McGovern should end. Smith should be given every chance to build more chemistry with the rest of the starting line before the Sept. 11 opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Arguably the highlight for Cowboys on that touchdown drive was blocking on interior line. LG Tyler Smith and C Matt Farniok cleared way for rookie RB Malik Davis here.
