A 2021 Mercedes-Benz driven by a 21-year-old Long Beach man was eastbound on Highway 152 when it crossed the dirt median.
It flipped as it struck a westbound Toyota Tacoma pickup, then overturned at least twice more, ending up in a field on the north side of the highway, the CHP said.
The people in the pickup — three males, whose ages were not available — were pronounced dead at the scene. The Mercedes driver had major injuries and was taken to a Modesto hospital. Debris from the vehicles struck a Toyota Highlander SUV but its occupants — two San Jose residents — were not injured, the CHP said.Earlier on Tuesday, at least six crashes were reported at the east end of Highway 152, and a 2½-mile stretch of the road was closed for several hours.
Strong winds whipping up dust created low visibility on the highway near Chowchilla. Nobody required hospital treatment after the collisions, which involved 12 cars, including a CHP car that was struck while responding to the calls.
