The whole thing felt curiously flat.
At least that is how it came over on TV, where most of us – let’s face it – actually experience the BAFTAs. In asking what the BAFTAs are for, and what would most improve the TV coverage, someone came up with the idea of asking Alison Hammond to runfrom a back room somewhere in the Royal Festival Hall, carrying out meaningless interviews while the actual awards ceremony, genially hosted by Richard E Grant, took place elsewhere.
I like Alison Hammond, who is one of life’s true professionals, but anyone who actually sits down to watch an awards ceremony wants to watch the prizes being given. They do not want to watch Geri Halliwell or anyone else tell them what fun it is being there. In the case of this year’s awards, for those watching at home, it robbed the ceremony of its two moments of genuine drama. The first was a mistake when Troy Kotsur, winner of last year’s Supporting Actor BAFTA for his role in, signed the announcement and his interpreter announced Carey Mulligan’s name as Best Supporting Actress, instead of Kerry Condon, who took the prize for her performance in.
, culminating in Best Picture. By the time this actually happened – live, like the last four categories – viewers could detect a certain weary acceptance descending on the crowd. Although it was expected to do well, no one anticipated the sweep it pulled off, including Best Director for Edward Berger and Best Cinematography for James Friend, whose charmingly dazed speech made it clear that he had no expectation of winning.
