The 2023 Ford Escape plug-in hybrid SUV offers sportier looks and decent EV range, but can it stand out from the crowd?
, its front styling and new light bar intended to be reminiscent of the sportier Ford Mustang Mach-E all-electric SUV. The interior was updated with a larger screen and new infotainment software. But outside of a new electrical architecture to enable over-the-air updates and the like, the Escape PHEV's basic underlying package otherwise remained mostly the same, offering a plug-in hybrid powertrain good for more than 100 MPGe and an impressive 37 miles of all-electric range.
We liked that the Escape's drive modes are committed, with EV mode sticking to EV-only power, although Sport seems to mostly just generate extra engine noise. There is no dedicated off-road mode, which makes sense as all-wheel drive is unavailable—an oversight in our book when so much of the country lives through four seasons of weather.
