Electric turbo, all-wheel drive, all-wheel steer - Mercedes-AMG throws kitchen sink at M340i rival
It was only a matter of time before Mercedes-AMG's spiffy four-cylinder engine was shared with other models following its debut in. After all the unit has many things in its favour: a novel electric exhaust-gas turbocharger for improved performance; a 48-volt electrical system that permits mild hybrid functionality; and, of course, two fewer cylinders than the 3.0-litre motor that previously powered the mid-tier C43 saloon and wagon..
Naturally it helps that you also get a) AMG's nine-speed Speedshift MCT overseeing the upshifts, and b) the 4Matic all-wheel drive system marshalling the delivery. As before, the C43 defaults to a 31/69 per cent torque split, so the model ought to feel rear-biased whether you opt for saloon or estate.
It has also taken the unusual and possibly telling decision to equip the new car with rear-axle steering without requiring customers to resort to the cost-option list. Factor in uprated 370mm, six-piston brakes and a punchier exhaust, and plainly there is no shortfall in whizz-bang tech. You can have 18-inch wheels if you wish, but expect 19s and 20s to be the norm.
Obviously we wouldn't put our money where our mouths are just yet , but on paper the C43 - particularly in crowd-pleasing wagon format - does appear to tick many desirable boxes. It won't be easy prising anyone from the
