Scientists claim that roughly 200 Martian meteorites originated from just five impact craters situated in the Tharsis and Elysium volcanic regions of Mars.

The HiRISE camera aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter acquired this closeup image of a"fresh" impact crater in the Sirenum Fossae region. A new study by the University of Alberta revealed their precise locations on the Red Planet.

“It is really amazing if you think about it. It’s the closest thing we can have to actually going to Mars and picking up a rock,” said Chris Herd, curator of the U of A’s Meteorite Collection and professor in the Faculty of Science.Thousands of tons of meteorite material fall to Earth daily, although the majority is too small to be noticed as dust.

This new study provides significant insights into the origins of Martian meteorites. By understanding the specific impact craters from which these meteorites were ejected, scientists can now group them based on their shared history and location on Mars. Herd highlights that a deeper understanding of the physics behind how rocks are ejected from Mars was crucial to this discovery.
