SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Anyone who has visited Summerside’s Harbourfront Theatre lately has likely encountered one of its strongest proponents, Richard Matthews.
Originally from the United Kingdom, Matthews now calls Summerside home and serves as the promoter and marketing manager for the city’s largest theatre and one of its key cultural touchstones. His family, including himself, his partner and their two cats, are building a life here and enjoying being part of the fabric of the Island’s art community.Matthews is almost as passionate about his new home as he is about theatre. Seriously, ask him about his Playbill collection sometime.I was born in a district of London called Wembley, famous for its large sports and music stadium. I now live in Summerside, P.E.I.When I believe in something and want a certain result, I don’t give up.
Moving to Atlantic Canada in fall 2021. While I miss my friends and family every day, I can’t ever see myself leaving, and we have been so lucky to have been welcomed so warmly here by our local community here in Summerside. This feels like home.I don’t really read; I’m dyspraxic, a neurodivergent condition where the brain doesn’t communicate with my muscles properly.
My wonderful partner, plus our two cats, one who we brought over from the U.K. and the other who we adopted from the Humane Society last year. Since living here and having a yard , I have really got into gardening too, and love growing our own vegetables.I have hundreds of theatre programmes from the shows I have seen in the West End in London over the last 20-30 years .
