The two were part of the unit that routinely illegally stopped, searched, roughed up and stole from residents of color from 2016 to 2018. Pent was part of the biggest theft the squad committed. He and Ramos stole $10,000 from a passenger in a vehicle they stopped in February 2017 and split the cash. Their police report didn’t mention the money. Pent and others routinely made people they arrested pay a “running tax.” Pent and others would “tax” the person by striking them multiple times if they ran from them.
In imposing the sentences, Judge Hayden said it was important to consider the remorse the men showed and their effort to improve themselves. Still, she had to make the victims and residents of Paterson “the focus.”
