Bad actors have targeted unemployment systems nationwide over the course of the pandemic.
is managing an estimated 776,000 potentially fraudulent unemployment insurance claims filed from the start of the pandemic through January, according to the agency.
“Fraud detection and deterrence work has become a primary focus for our team so that we can facilitate claim filing for victims of ID theft,” spokeswoman Angela Woellner said in a statement. The agency has pivoted to dedicate 40 staff and 200 contract workers to the job of processing each flagged claim.
