A groundbreaking drilling mission in the North Atlantic has provided an unprecedented 1268-meter-long drill core from the Earth’s mantle. This core offers new insights into mantle composition, including unexpected low pyroxene levels and the role of hydrothermal processes. These findings enhance our understanding of deep Earth geology and hint at the conditions that could have supported the origins of life.
The researchers say the rocks recovered from the mantle bear a closer resemblance to those that were present on early Earth rather than the more common rocks that make up our continents today. Credit: Thomas Ronge Now, Johan Lissenberg and colleagues report the recovery and characterization of a nearly continuous 1268-meter-long drill core of serpentinized abyssal mantle peridotite from the mid-Atlantic ridge.
“Decades of ocean floor sampling by dredging have painted a rough mineralogical picture of mantle. Yet, each new drilling mission reveals surprising views of mantle and formation of the oceanic crust,” writes Eric Hellebrand in a related Perspective. “More ambitious drilling projects will reveal important pieces to understand the biogeochemical effects of oceanic mantle.”
