Officials hope to raise more than $101,000 for repairs to the historic house.

Now local historic society officials say they are in a race with time to raise $101,000 for repairs to preserve the building.Al Amrhein | For NJ Advance Media Snow Hill eventually became Lawnside, which borough history said came into existence around 1840, but Shockley, 68, a retired journalist, said Black people had begun to settle here in the 1700s.
“We have to keep this going on, but it’s all volunteers,” Shockley said. “We’re still a grassroots organization.”
