Doctor Strange may be a heroic Sorcerer Supreme, but the role has been held by villains too, including several who could easily overpower him.
While Doctor Strange may be the best-known Sorcerer Supreme, there have been several who were more powerful than him. But it's not heroic mystics who most often rival his powers - it's his evil counterparts. The role of Sorcerer Supreme is about power and mastery of magic, not heroism, meaning that many evil magic-users have claimed the title of Sorcerer Supreme over its long history.
9 Salomé Salomé is a former affiliate of the ancient magical species known as the Fallen and could arguably be considered the first Sorceress Supreme to come from Earth. Debuting in 1994 in Marvel Presents #146 , Salomé has fought Doctor Strange multiple times in attempts to regain her title. Though she was predominantly a villain for him in the 1990s, she recently returned in Marvel's Unforgiven crossover event.
6 Moridun Hailing from the Fifth Cosmos - a version of reality that existed before the formation of the Marvel Multiverse - Moridun is another multidimensional foe that Doctor Strange has faced, created by Al Ewing & Gerardo Sandoval. Surviving his own iteration of reality, Moridun sought forbidden knowledge, but was instead transformed into Omnimax - an earlier version of Galactus.
3 Merlyn/Merlin Serving as both an ally to Marvel's heroes and an enemy, Merlyn is one of the most powerful sorcerers in Marvel's comic universe - so mighty that he is connected to every version of himself across the multiverse. Though he has had several interactions with Doctor Strange, and is treated as the unofficial leader of all Sorcerers Supreme, he has most recently been a major enemy of the X-Men in the pages of Tini Howard and Marcus To's Excalibur.
