Some sequels to popular movies end up shockingly lost or completely overlooked, despite how well the originals did.

Hollywood loves nothing more than movie sequels, because they come with ready-made audiences, but they aren't always as popular as the original movie or even remembered at all. If the first installment was widely successful, that can create some very high expectations to live up to, and not every sequel manages it.

10 American Psycho 2 9 American Psycho was not a huge critical or financial hit when it was first released, but the satirical horror film starring Christian Bale as a murderous 1980s yuppie soon became a cult classic. In 2002, a direct-to-video sequel was commissioned, straying from the original Brett Easton Ellis novel and creating a new storyline, starring Mila Kunis as a young girl who oddly killed Patrick Bateman and was then possessed by his spirit.

7 S. Darko - A Donnie Darko Tale S. Darko is a loose sequel to the hit 2001 horror movie Donnie Darko, with Daveigh Chase reprising her role as Samantha Darko, sister of Donnie. The film follows Samantha on a road trip gone wrong, where she becomes a victim of the same dark forces as her brother. 5 Son Of The Mask Speaking of bad sequels that Jim Carrey declined, the comic book movie, The Mask, starring Jim Carrey, was a smash hit with audiences upon its 1994 release. When it came to the sequel, Son of the Mask, however, it was a troubled production, resulting in Jim Carrey and other cast and crew members eventually dropping out, and the movie not releasing until 2005.

3 Showgirls 2: Penny's From Heaven Showgirls is one of the few movies that tried to make a sequel that captured the exact style of the previous, for good or ill. 1995's Showgirls was critically panned to the point that many saw it as one of the worst films ever made, but nevertheless, the film had a huge cult following among film fanatics.
