One detail surrounding the Nazis in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade makes the second sequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark, and the franchise as a whole, much more sinister. Released in the blockbuster-packed summer of 1989, the third film in the Indiana Jones franchise became the biggest hit of the year, outgrossing films like Back to the Future Part II, The Little Mermaid, and even Batman at the worldwide box office.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY However, there is a hidden detail within The Last Crusade that darkens the film overall. While it may seem to be the most family-friendly Indiana Jones film on the surface, largely due to the hilarious chemistry between Harrison Ford and the late Sean Connery as son and father, the fact that the villains are the Nazis does lend some gravitas to the movie.
The Last Crusade's costume designers, Anthony Powell and Joanna Johnston, obtained the authentic Nazi uniforms from a cache that had been discovered in Germany. This made their jobs for this particular scene much easier, as they had to design significantly fewer replica uniforms. However, the uniforms' history adds a menacing layer that looms over Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
